Hannah becomes hurricane

Tropical Storm Hannah became a hurricane on Monday while causing strong waves, rain and blizzards in Atlanta, near the Bahamas as well as Turks and Caicos Islands, reported the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane warnings were issued for Turks and Caicos Islands, a chain of islands, as well as for the centre and southeast of the Bahamas. Meteorologists warned that the meteor could hit the U.S. mainland in the coming days.

Meteorologists said that Hanna could landfall anywhere from Miami to the outer banks of North Carolina this week.

At 1730 GMT, the center of Hanna was located near the island of Mayaguana, in the southeastern Bahamas.

A Colombian died and a Brazilian was missing after both were washed away in a river in eastern Puerto Rico grown by rains that caused Hurricane Hannah on the island.

The spokesman for the state agency for emergency management and Disaster Management (AEM), Jose Echevarria, informed the AP that "found the body of Colombia and continues the search for the girl from Brazil."

Young people were with other people in the White River Naguabo, about 60 miles east of San Juan, were surprised when a flood due to the rains which left in its wake Hanna to the north of Puerto Rico.

Echevarria confirmed that young people are students at the University of Puerto Rico.

The AEM identified the dead as Alejandro Lopez Pabón, 29, and disappeared as Fernanda Okumura, 22.

The rescue efforts were suspended until Tuesday morning due to lack of light and poor weather conditions, police reported.

Echevarria said that his agency staff in Naguabo assured that at the time of the flood, young people were in a "restricted".

Edgardo Viera, spokesman for the Police Humacao, a village adjacent to Naguabo, explained that in place there is a dam and there are several areas where passage is restricted to prevent accidents.

According to preliminary information, when the floodwaters began another woman who was with the Colombian and Brazilian climbed to a large stone in the middle of the river and from there caught with a cell phone to emergency service and succeeded with difficulty to describe the rescuers where they were.

About three hours later, rescue teams found the body of Colombian.
