Nobel peace for Ingrid Betancourt asked authorities in Rome

The president of Rome province, and the mayor of the Italian capital, took advantage of their encounters with the Colombian to promote the candidacy of former abducted in this award.

Betancourt was received together with his mother, Yolanda Pulecio, at the presidential palace. No detail about the meeting was provided by the presidency.

After meeting with President Giorgio Napolitano, was the Mayor of Rome Gianni Alemanno and his wife, Isabelle Rauti.

Betancourt "is the symbol of the struggle to defend human dignity, the fight against drug trafficking and all criminal deviations that exist in the world today," said Alemanno to the press.

The mayor stressed "the charisma and strength" of the former hostage.

On Monday, Ingrid Betancourt was received by Pope Benedict XVI in a hearing at a press conference described as "extraordinary experience".

Betancourt must travel to Florence on Wednesday (central Italy) where it will be declared honorary citizen of the city.

Ingrid Betancourt was released last July 2 after more than six years of captivity in the hands of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
